Sweetheart cards with pockets
What you will make:

These greeting cards for your sweetheart feature pockets that you can fill with little tokens of your love. The pockets are also ideal for presents of money or gift cards. These cards are  quick and easy to make using solid color cardstock and patterned papers that you can download and print. Great for Valentine's Day, too!

Here's what you need:
  • White or red card blank: 4¼″ by 5½
  • Colored paper or cardstock for pockets
  • White paper for printing heart ePapers
  • Coordinating paper scraps and crafting leftovers
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Ruler and pencil
  • 1" heart paper punch
  • Optional: Rubber stamps and markers.

Make Sweetheart Cards with Pockets

Read through the instructions before starting.

Scroll down to see the instructions for three card options. All the cards use digital paper that you download and print on white paper. These printed papers are combined with a coordinating colored paper or cardstock.

#1: Pastel Hearts Sweetheart Card
Decorative paper:
Solid color paper or cardstock:
  • Orange cardstock
  • Pink cardstock
  • White paper or cardstock
  • White card blank
Miscellaneous supplies:
  • 1" heart punch
  • Small heart and letter rubber stamps

Prep work: Download Pastel Hearts ePaper and print on white paper. Cut a 4" by 5¼" rectangle from the Pastel Hearts ePaper and the orange cardstock. Cut two 4" strips of hearts from the Pastel Hearts ePaper. Cut two ½" by 4" strips of pink cardstock. Punch and stamp two hearts from the pink cardstock. Tip: Use Pastel Polka Dots digital papers to make items for the card pockets.

Bookmark: Cut a 1" by 4½" strip of pink cardstock and a ½" by 4" strip of Pastel Hearts ePaper. Glue the paper to the cardstock and decorate the reverse side as you like.

Mini-heart card: Cut a 2½" by 5" strip of pink cardstock. Fold the cardstock in half. Cut a heart shape, leaving about ½" of the fold uncut. Decorate the heart card with rubber stamps.

To assemble card: Cut and glue the pockets following the instructions in Steps 3 and 4 of the Pocket Cards tutorial, using the orange cardstock as the background paper. Glue the pre-cut strips and punched hearts on the card front as pictured, and insert the bookmark and mini-card in the pockets.

#2: White Hearts on Red Sweetheart Card / Valentine
Decorative paper:
Solid color paper or cardstock:
  • Red card blank
  • Red cardstock
  • Black cardstock
  • White cardstock
Miscellaneous supplies:
  • 1" heart punch
  • Red and black markers

Prep work: Download White Hearts on Red digital paper and print on white paper. Cut a 4" by 5¼" rectangle from the White Hearts on Red digital paper and the black cardstock. Cut two ½" by 4" strips of red cardstock. Draw a thick black line down the middle of each red strip. Punch three hearts from the red cardstock.

Mini-card: Cut a 3" by 6" strip of white cardstock. Fold the cardstock in half. Cut a 2" heart shape from the red cardstock and cut out a heart center leaving a heart-shape frame. Glue the heart frame to the mini-card. Decorate the mini-card with hearts and a message using the markers.

To assemble card: Cut and glue the pockets following the instructions in Steps 3 and 4 of the Pocket Cards tutorial, using the White Hearts on Red digital paper as the background paper. Glue the pre-cut strips and punched hearts on the card front as pictured, and insert the mini-card in a pocket. Put whatever you like in the other pocket.

#3: Red Dots and Stripes Sweetheart Card
Decorative paper:
Solid color paper or cardstock:
  • White card blank
  • Red cardstock
  • White cardstock
Miscellaneous supplies:
  • 1" heart punch
  • Small heart and love-themed rubber stamps
  • Red marker

Prep work: Download Mixed Dots in Reds and Valentine's Day Stripes digital papers and print on white paper or cardstock. Cut a 4" by 5¼" rectangle from the Mixed Dots in Reds digital paper and the red cardstock. Cut a 4" by 5¼" rectangle at a 45° from the Valentine's Day Stripes digital paper, and from this rectangle cut off a ½" by 4" strip.  To make a medallion for the front of the card, stamp a 1" or so image on white cardstock and cut out the medallion leaving a small border of white.

Bookmark: Cut a 1½" by 5¼" strip of red cardstock and a 1¼" by 4½" strip of white cardstock . Punch three hearts from the red cardstock, and one heart from the white cardstock. Stamp images on the hearts and outline the white heart with a red marker. Glue the hearts to the white cardstock, glue the white cardstock to the red cardstock, and decorate the reverse side as you like.

Mini-cards: Cut 1½" by 3" strips of red and white cardstock. Fold the cardstock in half. Stamp 1" or so images on red and white cardstock and cut out both in a square leaving a small border around the image. Glue the white stamped square to the red mini-card and the red square to the white card. Decorate the inside the mini-cards with hearts and a message using the markers.

To assemble card: Cut and glue the pockets following the instructions in Steps 3 and 4 of the Pocket Cards tutorial, using the red cardstock as the background paper and the Mixed Dots in Reds rectangle for the primary pocket. To make the striped border on the red pocket, cut the Valentine's Day Stripes rectangle the same as the red cardstock and glue it to the red pocket to form a border. Glue the pre-cut Valentine's Day Stripes strip and stamped medallion on the card front as pictured, and insert the bookmark and mini-cards in the pockets.
