Tyler, Aunt Annie's feline palCat Toys from Trash

By Tyler the Cat

About this project

Hi, I'm Aunt Annie's cat, Tyler. She's not the only crafty one in our house -- I make my own cat toys. Let me tell you how.

Cats just love to play with things they can bat around on the floor. Store bought toys are nice, but sometimes cats like to make their own toys. In this project cats will learn how to recycle trash into toys.

This project is rated VERY EASY for cats to do.

What you need

  • a wastebasket full of trash
  • a person getting a beverage in the kitchen

Project how to

Here are two ways to make toys by recycling trash:
  1. Find a wastebasket filled with a variety of trash. It is best to avoid ones that smell of garbage. Look into the wastebasket for small wads of computer paper, milk jug rings, q-tips, or pop bottle rings. Chomp down on your found toy and remove it from the wastebasket. (Try not to dump the contents on the floor.) Toss it into the air and go have a ball with your new toy! Sometimes I take the toy to Aunt Annie, and she will throw it for me.
  2. There is a better way to get milk jug or pop bottle rings. When a person goes into the kitchen for a beverage, rub their legs and purr. Meow loudly if they take the ring to the wastebasket. Let them know you want that ring! It might take a few tries, but you can train your person to give you the rings as toys.

Here are more cat toy ideas from my feline (and human) friends:
  • New this month!
Squeeky and his human Judy Have fruity idea for a cat toy from trash.
  • Amelia tells how humans can make a toy with a crumpled newspaper.
  • Bob has a cat toy for humans to make.
  • Ginger in Kansas says, "Puff has a five inch foam ball, that he stole out my craft box, and thinks he is in cat heaven."
  • Roscoe also has some tips for other cats on how to make cat toys from recycled trash.
  • Kato, Molly, and Rosie (along with housemate Betty Smith) have an idea on how to use pom-poms as toys for cats.
  • Molly and Rosie (the Tabbies), along with their ladyfriend Betty Joan Smith, tell about a cat craft.
  • Chi-Chi, SirMe, Killashandra, Manypaws, Cherie and ShiDi, along with their friend Sue Chapman, tell about a cat craft.
  • Mr. Giorgio Fini (Fini for short) tells about his passion for celery leaves.

Hi! I am Tyler and I live with Aunt Annie. I am 12 years old (but who's counting). My favorite activities are playing with and making toys. I also love to look out the window and take naps whenever I want.

I love to hear from other felines on the net. Send me e-mail at TylerTheCat@auntannie.com.
