How to Make a Set of Six Unique Valentine's Day Cards

Read through the tutorial before starting.
Step 1: Print Patterned Paper

The cards are made with patterned Red and Yellow Harlequin Diamonds digital paper and Pen 'n Ink Hearts cutouts or other heart cutouts. Print the digital paper and cutout patterns on white cardstock. Feel free to pick any digital paper or heart cutout you find appealing.

Tip: You can also make Valentine's Day party invitations. Just download and print  "Join Us" or "You're invited!" message cards and cut out. There are 18 or 9 message cards per sheet.

Step 2: Cut

Cut the Red and Yellow Harlequin Diamonds digital paper  or other patterned paper into six sections. First, cut the paper into three parts, with cuts across the 8½" width at 3¾" and at 7½" along the 11" side. You now have two 3¾" by 8½" pieces and one 3½" by 8½" piece.

Cut one 3¾" by 8½" piece in half to get two 3¾" by 4¼" pieces.

Cut the other 3¾" by 8½" piece at 5" along the 8½" side to get 3¾" by 5" and 3¾" by 3½" pieces.

Cut the remaining 3½" by 8½" piece at 4¾" along the 8½" edge, resulting in 3½" by 4¾" and 3½" by 3¾" pieces.

Tip: When cutting the Red and Yellow Harlequin Diamonds digital paper, try to cut between rows and columns of diamonds.

Cut out six hearts from the heart cutout sheet(s).

Step 3: Make Cards

Now get creative! Use each of the six patterned paper pieces as the central theme of a Valentine's Day card and add a heart cutout, maybe a strip or two of red cardstock or patterned paper. You might also edge the cardstock with black markers. Don't hesitate to pull out your craft leftovers and paper punches as you decorate each card!

Here are the details of how each sample card was assembled. Three of the cards are oriented horizontally and three are vertical.

Card 1: Glued a 4¼" by 3¾" diamond patterned piece on the right side of the card and filled the space to the left with a 1¼" red strip, and centered on top of it a 1" yellow strip and a ½"-wide diamond strip. A cutout with two hearts was glued in the center of the diamond patterned piece.

Card 2: The 5" by 3¾" diamond patterned piece was glued in the center of the card. A 1" by 4¼" yellow strip, with a 5/8" by 4¼" red strip glued down the center, was glued towards the left side of the card with a heart cutout glued over it.

Card 3: A 4¼″ by 5½″ piece of yellow cardstock was cut and glued covering the front of the card. Trimmed the 4¾" by 3½" diamond patterned piece to remove any partial diamonds and glued it in the center of the card. A 5/8"-wide red strip was glued above the last row of diamonds and a heart cutout was glued in the center of the card.

Card 4: A 4¼" by 3¾" rectangle of red cardstock was cut, and then trimmed a 4¼" by 3¾" diamond patterned piece to about 4" by 3¾" to remove any partial diamonds. Glued these pieces in the center of the card and glued a rectangular heart cutout in the middle.

Card 5: Cut a 4¼" by 4½" rectangle of red cardstock and glued it at the top of the card. Glued the 3½" by 3¾" diamond patterned piece in the center of the red rectangle. Glued a heart cutout in the center of that. A red 3/8"-wide strip was glued below the red rectangle.

Card 6: Cut a 4″ by 5¼" rectangle of red cardstock and glued it in the center of the card. Trimmed a 3¾" by 3½" diamond patterned piece to remove any partial diamonds and glued toward the top of the red background mat. A heart cutout was glued in the center of the patterned piece. A 1"-wide by 4" yellow strip was glued near the bottom of the mat.

That's it! A set of six Valentines. Ready to make more?
