Printable Tangram Patterns

Print classic seven-piece tangram sets in two sizes.
Printable Tangram Patterns in two sizes, standard 4 per page and large

The standard printable includes four tangram sets for classroom use, family activities, and creative play, while the large pattern is ideal for demonstrations and younger children. The finished tangram sets measure 3.875 inches (9.8 cm) and 7.75 inches (19.6 cm), respectively. These black-and-white templates are ready to color or print on colored cardstock.

Standard Tangram (4 per Page)

Choose the tangram size that best fits your activity. Standard four-per-page tangrams are ideal for most puzzles and classroom use, while the large one-per-page tangram works well for demonstrations and younger children.

Each pattern is a PDF file that prints on standard Letter/A4 paper.

Here's what you need:
  • Cardstock, white or colored
  • Scissors
  • Alternative to cardstock: Paper, lightweight cardboard, and glue

Instructions

  1. Print the pattern directly onto white or colored cardstock, or print it on regular paper to glue onto lightweight cardboard or poster board.

  2. For a sturdier tangram, glue the printed pattern to lightweight cardboard or poster board.

Tip: Be sure the glue completely covers the back of the tangram puzzle. Also make sure that there are no loose corners or sides.

  3. Cut the tangram puzzle into seven pieces on the solid black lines.

Cut the tangram on the black lines to create seven pieces

Tip: Straight and accurate cuts are important.

  4. Use the seven tangram pieces to recreate traditional silhouettes or design your own figures. Keep these simple rules in mind:

    • All seven tans are used in each picture (except where noted).
    • All tans remain flat, none standing.
    • Each tan may touch another, but none may overlap.
